|Uther Pendragon, father of the
legendary king Arthur, may have been the ruler of the ancient kingdom of
Rheged in the 5th Century. Castlerigg or Druid's circle is one of the many prehistoric monuments
in this part of Northern England.|
Another stone circle is called Long Meg. The stones here are said to have once been a coven of witches caught dancing at their sabbat celebrations and turned to stone by the Scottish wizard Michael Scot.
As with some other circles, it is believed that no one counting the stones can come up with the same number twice.
Local legend also tells that should anyone do this, then the spell will be broken and the Long Meg witches freed.
