Storm Birds

Watercolour

In Irish folklore Cliodna was a sea goddess who usually took the form of a sea bird, which symbolized the Celtic afterlife.
As a goddess of the waves she was believed to be embodied in every ninth wave that reached the shore.
This was said to break higher and stronger than the other waves.
I painted this picture from a photograph of gulls and swallows silhouetted against a stormy sky.
