St. Brendan or Brandan (who became one of the Irish saints) was an Abbot who founded many important Irish monasteries: and also a traveler who probably visited Scotland and Wales.
According to the myth, Brendan and his band of monks embarked on a seven-year voyage across the Atlantic in search of the “Promised Land,” where it is claimed another Irish monk known as St. Finbarr had been some years before. If any of this medieval story is to be believed, then the mysterious country that Brendan eventually discovered may well have been the American mainland.
